Prof. Chen Jin, director of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botnanical Garden (XTBG), headed up a 4-person group to Motuo, the remotest county in southeast Tibet. The visit is part of work to promote implementation of strategic cooperation between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Tibet.

The XTBG group mainly concerns the construction of a new botanical garden in Motuo. They made field investigations of the ecological environment, vegetation types, and climate environment.

Motuo is the last county where the Brahmaputra River crosses over in China before it flows to India. As the remotest county in the southeastern part of Tibet, Motuo is located on the southern slope of the Himalayas. It is regarded as the “Lotus Holy land” to the Tibetan Buddhists.

As one-tenth of China's plant species can been found in Motuo, it has been dubbed the "Natural Museum of Tibet" or "Tibetan Botanical Garden". Plants from both frigid and subtropical zones are compatible and coexist on this small isolated "island".
