Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) is holding its first exhibition of Bougainvillea flowers from December 19, 2022 to January 30, 2023. Hundreds of Bougainvillea shrubs in different shapes and colors are greeting visitors in winter.
XTBG has been attaching importance to collecting and protecting plant species since its founding in 1959, collection and cultivation of Bougainvillea plants is no exception. Numerous Bougainvillea vines in different colors, shapes, sizes have formed spectacular landscapes in the garden, especially at the Flower Garden.
Bougainvillea is a genus of vine-like shrubs. It is a tropical vining shrub that comes in a wide array of bright and fanciful colors. These vines are typically thorny (although there are thornless varieties) and range in different sizes. They produce a spectacular show of color periodically through the year, but the showy blooms aren’t true flowers.
The "flowers" are actually modified leaves, called bracts, that are long-lasting and bright. The colorful bracts outshine the plant's true (but tiny) flower, much like a poinsettia. They appear periodically throughout most of the year, but are especially plentiful in the winter, when the splashes of color are a welcome sight.
Bougainvillea blooms in red, pink and purple , white, yellow, and orange.
