A new cultivar of Victoria water lily, belonging to the genus Victoria in family Nymphaeaceae, has been officially registered by theInternational Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS). 

The new water lily cultivar, Victoria ‘Dreamer’, was bred Mr. Wu Fuchuan and Mr. Liu Meng of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG).  

In the registration process, all provisions, rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants have been satisfied. IWGS president Justin Tilus and registrar Tamara Kilbane signed the certificate of recognition to certify that Wu Fuchuan and Liu Meng have officially registered ictoria ‘Dreamer’. 

“To our knowledge, the Victoria ‘Dreamer’ is the first giant water lily cultivar officially registered by IWGS in China”, said Wu Fuchuan of XTBG. 

The Victoria water lily belongs to the genus Victoria, in honor of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. It is a tropical plant that can thrive in tropical areas with humid and warm weather. 

The plant has the largest leaves among all aquatic plants. Its leaves are huge, covering a wide area when floating in water. The species known as the giant water lily even has leaves which have diameters up to three meters.

The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS) is recognized by the International Society for Horticultural Science as the official registrar for waterlilies (Nymphaeaceae) and lotus (Nelumbonaceae). The registrars’ purpose is to serve local, national and international horticulture through recording and clarifying areas of confusion in the naming and identification of cultivated plants in these families. 

Cultivars of waterlilies and lotus are registered for two reasons: first to prevent, as much as possible, names that are already appropriated from being given to new hybrids, and second, to prevent the use of names which so closely resemble existing names that they would cause confusion. Names must also conform to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.
